A horror movie written and directed by Guillermo del Toro — the south-of-the- border David Cronenberg — Cronos is an art-house flick that would be equally at home in the grind house. Part Hellraiser, part The Name of the Rose, it centers on an elderly antiques dealer (Federico Luppi) who becomes infatuated with a golden medieval orb, which stings him and turns him into a vampire. Cronos' shocks may be few, but its raw, bare-bones F/X and deliberate pacing make it a refreshing alternative to the typical Hollywood bloodsucker.
