Lead Performance: The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes try for creativity on their third album-songs open like a salsa combo, a square-dance hoedown, even Journey. But track after track falters into boogie confusion: The mulchy guitar riffs and Chris Robinson's emotive squeals hunt for something solid to grab on to, but all they find is the Crowes' usual shapeless, mid-tempo bluzak.
