Cagney and Lacey have to prove they can still walk the thin blue line. Who better to assess the credibility of the NYPD plainclothes duo than another female officer accustomed to, well, being out of uniform? We asked Carol Shaya — New York's famed ''nudie cop,'' who flashed more than her badge in last August's Playboy — to investigate. Shaya brings more than an officer's interest to the case: She recently wrapped a bit part on two episodes of Fox's New York Undercover (no jokes, please). Her report on Cagney & Lacey: The Return:
*To stop a fleeing felon, Cagney fires into the air. ''You're only allowed to fire if (the perpetrator is) going to fire at you.'' Any exceptions? ''If you're stuck in an elevator shaft and have a broken leg and need someone to help.''
*Lacey says she's been shot at eight or nine times. ''Most cops go through their whole career without ever being shot at.''
*The detectives go undercover, listen to a wiretap from a van, and burst into a bad guy's warehouse. ''Cops just don't do all that. There are separate units for each task.''
*Lacey's tell-it-like-it-is style checks out. ''Even when Lacey takes time off as a housewife, she has the cop in her. Cops have a stronger personality, they're not as laid-back [as most people]. They're always aware.''
*On C&L, as in real life, the temptations of corruption are everywhere. ''Cops definitely don't make enough money.''
*Lacey tells her impatient husband she'll be out of the bathroom in 28 minutes. Says Shaya, ''That's me!''
