And finally the answer to the question, Where has Cher been lately? The Oscar- winning actress, singer, and hair-care-products magnate is popping up in 350,000 mailboxes pitching her new merchandise. She has named her line of home furnishings and clothing Sanctuary (most people would call her direct-mail offering a catalog; she refers to it as ''a coffee-table book you can order from''), and the goods resemble a sort of medieval L.L. Bean. ''All the stuff is from my house. I've been collecting this stuff for 25 years,'' says Cher, who personally designed 9 of the 200 items. Some things to consider before taking Sanctuary: *Sanctuary has already gone Hollywood. When director Paul Mazursky needed props for next summer's Faithful, a thriller (with Cher), the star turned saleswoman. ''I told him, 'I have some stuff you should see,''' she says. Filmgoers will note Sanctuary's time-transcending silver tea set, music stand, candles, glass bottles, and robes.
*Cher gives her family guarantees. Not only has she used the line to make her Miami Beach home resemble a Gothic cathedral, she's also played designer for daughter Chastity Bono. ''Chas wanted me to redo her place as a gift and I said, 'Chastity, try it and if you don't like it, I'll get you other stuff.'''
*Next up, crosses in spring colors. ''We're going to look at things that have sold, things that haven't sold, and replace them,'' Cher says. The velvet couches ($1,120) and bed ($1,150) haven't exactly been flying out of the warehouse, but as Cher puts it, ''Furniture is always a big item to go and we $ don't have a track record yet.'' Best-sellers are incense ($22), pillows ($60- $140), and a golden sun ($54) that Cher hangs in her own home.
*Sanctuary's success isn't in the stars-yet. Cher, who reportedly invested $2 million, says, ''We were floundering a little, but we've only been out for a few weeks.'' Besides, she knew it wouldn't be another Lori Davis right out of the box. ''(My) astrologer Bridgett Walther predicted a lot of bumps at the beginning.''
