Her first target is an accused murderer who turns out to be Joe Morelli, who years before stole Stephanie's heart and virginity. This is Evanovich's first novel, and sometimes it shows. After being beaten up by Ramirez, Stephanie intones patly, ''The afternoon's assault had been a degrading, frightening experience.'' Say what? But mostly Stephanie is intelligent, cheery, and genuine.
