Lead Performance: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion; Genre: Rock
B
New Yorker Jon Spencer and his two bandmates jam like it's blues night in the psych ward on Orange. Spencer spastically spits out lyrics sounding like Elvis Presley on one too many Shastas; behind him, the band cranks out manic chords that tumble around a drumbeat and rarely commit to melody. The resulting cross between rock & roll and insanity can be thrilling in its fervency; it can also be as boring as a band warming up before the show. B
