"Pocahontas" and "The Lion King" share the screen -- Disney shoots for box office success with cross-promotions between the films

Last holiday season, Disney proudly previewed The Lion King. But it was no ordinary trailer. Instead of the usual scenes from the movie, it featured The Lion King's opening four-minute musical sequence, ''Circle of Life,'' in its entirety. Attempting to repeat this success, Disney has released a similar preview of next summer's Pocahontas. Currently playing with — what else? — The Lion King, the Pocahontas clip also features a complete musical number, in which the Native American princess takes Pilgrim John Smith on a sweeping tour of her forest home. ''We are all connected to each other,'' Pocahontas sings, surrounded by woodland creatures, ''in a circle, in a hoop that never ends.'' Any echoes of ''Circle of Life'' may (or may not) be unintentional, but they'll no doubt strike a chord. In fact, Disney is so certain of Pocahontas' selling power that it's advertising the trailer in Lion King newspaper ads. Is such confidence warranted? Hear it from the mouths of babes: ''Can we see this at Christmas?'' one little moviegoer asked her mom after her first glimpse of Pocahontas. If that's not a vote of confidence, what is?
