Hugh Leonard's script about rivalry in an Irish village between a mousy, mysterious resident (Farrow) and a worldly, fortune-hunting newcomer (Richardson) is as wispy as a pussy willow in a gale. The whole cast, especially Joan Plowright (now the reigning disgruntled screen dowager), is game, and the gossipy atmosphere mildly amusing, but the dialogue isn't nearly as wry or wicked as it means to be. Even the clever trick ending, which clears up a lot of murky motivations, may leave viewers asking, ''Is that all there is?'' It sends you out with whimsy when what's called for is a bit more meanness. B-
