I don't know why movie critics used to foam at the mouth at the mere mention of Jim Varney; as a purveyor of genial hickish slapstick, he's harmless enough. In any case, they don't have him to kick around anymore, because Ernest Goes To School is a straight-to-video concoction, meaning it's even cheesier than his previous films. A plot device involving a ''subatomic brain accelerator'' provides the star with the chance to show a little more, um, range than his constantly mugging hero generally allows, but otherwise it's stupid janitorial jokes galore, enough to keep fans of sophomoric humor satisfied until the next Jim Carrey flick hits theaters.C
