Oblivion (1994)

Combining an Old West setting with intergalactic villainy, Oblivion would fit in nicely on a late-'50s drive-in bill, right alongside Teenage Caveman. As a sheriff's pacifist son is forced to avenge his father's death at the hands of evil gunslingers, Oblivion proceeds like any classic Western, except that its mining town is set in the year 3031, and the evil gunslinger happens to be a large lizard. Hipsters will be won over by the film's fannish spirit, which extends to the quirky casting: Carel Struychen (Lurch from the Addams Family movies) is especially fun as a comic-relief undertaker. B
