Robert Altman's Prêt-á-Porter has had a makeover. The film, which skewers the world of haute couture and stars everyone from Lauren Bacall to Julia Roberts, has been retitled Ready to Wear (the English translation) although the studio already spent a bundle on the ad campaign. ''The ladies at my mother's bridge game were pronouncing the title all different ways,'' says Miramax
cochairman Harvey Weinstein. A studio spokeswoman also admitted that the phrase en français was causing confusion apparently, even among
people involved in the film. ''I'm not really into the fashion thing,'' says Salt 'N' Pepa's Cheryl James, who contributed to the soundtrack. ''But Prêt-á-Porter? What does it mean?'' Because of the name change, Ready to Wear will now arrive in theaters Dec. 25 (not Dec. 21, as planned). Fashionably late, of course.
