Tom Cruise runs his star machinery energetically in this elusive, futuristic thriller as a kind of sleek police chief who, tipped off by fluid-borne human psychics (none more gifted than that played by Samantha Morton), can see a homicide before it happens and avert the precrime by arresting the pre-perp. Minority Report is a meditation on free will and parenthood in a Big Brother-type society -- as well as a bookend to ''A.I. Artificial Intelligence'' -- from Steven Spielberg, who continues to be led in midlife to dark, hard crannies of dystopia and art by the spirit of the late Stanley Kubrick.
