The pairing of trusty on-screen gems Blanchett and Crudup held such promise. The plot points of Sebastian Faulks' novel -- a Scottish woman (Blanchett) goes undercover with the French Resistance to search for her downed pilot lover (Rupert Penry Jones) and fend off Nazis -- seem to offer such fertile storytelling soil. Why, then, is the movie such a sterile affair, disjointed and dour, with poorly drawn characters and wasted opportunities? The actors should keep their heads up, though; their cause was betrayed by Gillian Armstrong's bad direction and a wishy-washy script.
