HART'S WAR Bruce Willis, Colin Farrell (2002, MGM, 125 mins.,
R, also on DVD) As the highest-ranking Yank in a Nazi POW camp,
Willis gives one of his clenched, stoic, ''serious actor''
performances. But even that is wasted motion in a genre muddle
that starts in Stalag 17 mode, slaps on a simplistic racial
conflict, then mutates into a speechifying courtroom drama,
before closing with a tepid Great Escape action-flick finale. The
credits list two screenwriters, but this feels like the work of
twice that many -- all trying to tell a different story.
