Of all the screen adaptations of Bram Stoker's Dracula — including Francis Ford Coppola's recent big-screen version — this one, made more than 70 years ago by F.W. Murnau with minimum special effects and maximum artistry, remains the most chilling. Digitally mastered from the most complete 35 mm print available, this disc, with the original tints restored, shows Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror at its correct projection speed. It also includes an alternate-soundtrack commentary by Lokke Heiss, a specialist on German silent films, that's full of informative tidbits about Murnau, though mention of Nosferatu's homoeroticism leaves unaddressed any connection to the director's overt homosexuality.
