On this two-CD set of recordings, The RCA Years 1947-1981, Chet Atkins proves that he was often schmaltzy (''Snowbird,'' ''Vincent'') but also innovative developing a much-copied two-finger-and-thumb picking style, experimenting with electronic effects, and blending country with jazz, classical, folk, Latin, and pop. Even if Atkins seemed a little square, in a lot of ways he was the hippest cat on the block. B
