All the advance work over at Alfred A. Knopf for Degree of Guilt has paid off. Billed for months as the literary person's courtroom thriller, a step up from John Grisham's The Firm and the equal of Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent, Richard North Patterson's book appears this week at No. 7 on the fiction list. Degree of Guilt will be doing well if it can hold its place through the spring, when new books by Turow and Grisham will appear to challenge it. FICTION WEEKS ON LIST
