Unlawful Entry is one of those defending-the-home thrillers that should gain potency in the privacy of your living room. Unfortunately, the small screen can't conceal the movie's basic flaws, which are built into the character of its villain, psycho cop Pete Davis (Ray Liotta). Officer Davis answers the burglary call of an upscale couple (Kurt Russell, Madeleine Stowe), then starts charming his way into their lives, with dark designs on the pretty missus. Naturally, no one realizes he's dangerous until it's too late. Liotta is creepy as the obsessed policeman, yet his motivations remain so obscure that he never really gets under our skin. At the same time, his derangement becomes so immediately apparent (at least to us) that the character is left with nowhere to go. Long before his climactic rampage, you've stopped being scared of the guy. Worse, you've stopped believing he's for real. C+
