Halifax, Nova Scotia, may seem an unlikely location for exciting rock & roll, but judging by Smeared, there's at least one great garage east of Maine. Sloan's debut LP is an exciting, melodic pop discovery, made by four young Canadians who seem to be in love — as all youth should be — with language, sound, and electricity. B+
