Although comparisons with Boyz N the Hood may have helped sink this film at the box office, South Central hits its own raw but right chord. Glenn Plummer is a clamped-tight caldron as the jailbird who turns around when his son (Christian Coleman) heads down the same mean streets, and Steve Anderson's slick direction makes this a vivid piece of agit-pop.
