This collection of short pieces on contemporary black culture, mostly from The Village Voice, does not disprove the maxim that very little magazine and newspaper writing is worth preserving between hard covers. Nelson George writes well, and had he developed a few of the ideas he sketches out here, he could have offered some memorable insights into a time of great flux in African-American culture. As hip-hop, like jazz before it, makes its way into all facets of American life, we could use a thoughtful examination of its meaning.
