Sam Neill plays a British secret intelligence officer looking for a kidnapped serviceman in Argentina in this slow-winded thriller. The ambient landscape in Hostage takes viewers down the morally scuzzy paths of John Le Carré novels, where self-hatred is almost de rigueur. And while the film is competent, even thoughtful at times, it is essentially uninspired and inoffensively dull. C-
