Dinosaur Jr founder and genius rock geek, J Mascis has fused his suburban rock and hardcore roots for the band's fifth and tamest album yet. The trio's pileups of extra loud, messy garage pop have been polished into catchy mutations of creamy classic rock on Where You Been. Although Dino's sound is smoother, there's still enough steel-wool appeal here (thanks in part to Mascis' sad, battered voice) to please indie purists. But that shouldn't matter anyway a good album's a good album. B+
