The cassette box promises an ''intimate look'' at Michael Jordan, and the first thing we learn about him is what brand of underwear he wears. The 55 minutes that follow the endorsements aren't much more revealing.

But crass commercialism and fake intimacy aside, the big problem with Michael Jordan Air Time is that the evident deftness of its editors comes dangerously close to overshadowing Jordan's astonishing on-court artistry. Air Time whizzes past his triumphs with the University of North Carolina, the Chicago Bulls, and the Dream Team mostly through a dizzying succession of Jordanisms cut to a funky soundtrack. It's fun to watch Jordan fly, of course, but the best basketball player of all time deserves better than this MTV-empty treatment. C+
