Why do so many promising performers follow their terrific debuts with second-rate stuff? Tracy Lawrence's 1991 Sticks and Stones featured witty and well-wrought songs and snappy, stripped-down production. Now he settles for clichéd themes and mawkish delivery on Alibis. Honky-tonk? More like the view from sleepy suburbia. B-
