Rated: PG-13; Genre: Drama; With: John Malkovich and Gary Sinise
B

Directed by stage actor Sinise, this stalwart, sad adaptation of the Steinbeck novel is okay as far as video Cliff's Notes go, but even lazy students may prefer to stick with the original 1939 Of Mice and Men. There's little grit and less vision in Sinise's take on dust-bowl America: This is the prettiest Depression you'll ever see. And Malkovich, one of the smartest actors around, may be too smart for the role of sweet, stupid behemoth Lenny; you can see his mind busily working at not working. Joe Morton packs more oomph into his one scene as a hunchbacked farmhand than the two leads manage in the whole film. B
