Like some rock & roll philosopher-jock, Outside editor at large Tim Cahill (A Wolverine Is Eating My Leg) walks the line dividing beauty and terror in the great outdoors. The 42 short travelogues in Pecked to Death by Ducks follow him around the globe as he seeks out nature's rare moments — usually arrived at after mildly dangerous exertion. Exploring America's deepest cave, pirouetting through a bison herd, and hanging from a half-mile-high cliff face, Cahill turns reading into a spectator sport. B+
