Like her husband, Stephen, Tabitha King has a soft spot for high school misfits. One on One's tragicomic love affair between Sam Styles the dim-yet-sensitive center for the boys' basketball team and Deanie Gauthier the physically and emotionally scarred point guard for the girls' lends an appropriately grotesque face to the trials of high school. Unfortunately, as Sam and Deanie overcome opponents and the small-mindedness of their peers, melodrama renders the story more juvenile than King's attractively twisted characters deserve. B-
