Like her husband, Stephen, Tabitha King has a soft spot for high school misfits. One on One's tragicomic love affair between Sam Styles — the dim-yet-sensitive center for the boys' basketball team — and Deanie Gauthier — the physically and emotionally scarred point guard for the girls' — lends an appropriately grotesque face to the trials of high school. Unfortunately, as Sam and Deanie overcome opponents and the small-mindedness of their peers, melodrama renders the story more juvenile than King's attractively twisted characters deserve. B-
