No one expects art from a title like Curse IV: The Ultimate Sacrifice, but what sounds like the ultimate sleaze is actually a film of considerable intensity and beauty. Director David Schmoeller (Puppet Master) takes a penny-dreadful tale of a demon trapped beneath an Italian monastery and infuses it with potent images of decay and Catholic dread. Hypnotic camera work, alternately graceful and delirious, captures a real state of spiritual anxiety as questions of doubt and faith hauntingly arise like unavoidable, noxious vapors. (Consumer alert: This film was previously released on videocassette as Catacombs.) B+
