Independent Worm Saloon (1993)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Butthole Surfers; Genre: Rock

Guitarist Paul Leary's psyched-out squall once suggested Funkadelic's Eddie Hazel tripping with skinheads. But Butthole Surfers' Independent Worm Saloon, a major-label debut, produced by ex-Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones, grinds along like roadhouse Motörhead (''Dust Devil,'' ''Goofy's Concern,'' ''Who Was in My Room Last Night?''). Vocalist/trickster Gibby Haynes, now more famous for playing with ex-Rock City Angel Johnny Depp, injects a few comic-book-horror yuks. B
