Details Lead Performance: Bruce Hornsby; Genre: Rock

Take away Bruce Hornsby's band, throw him in the studio with dexterous jazzbos Branford Marsalis and Pat Metheny and rock icons Jerry Garcia and Bonnie Raitt, and what do you get? Something Warner Bros. might have released in 1973. Harbor Lights exudes the same warmth, the same sense of every note being in the right place as, say, James Taylor's Gorilla — and unfortunately, in 1993, most people may want to hear it about as often. Original? Listen hard and you'll hear echoes of Little Feat, Procol Harum, or even Steely Dan. What you won't hear: a song half as catchy as Hornsby's 1986 existential biggie, ''The Way It Is.'' Which is why you probably won't be listening in the first place. B-
