In Search of Manny (1993)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Lead Performance: Luscious Jackson; Genre: Rock

The best thing about Luscious Jackson's debut on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label is its cover: a snapshot of a lecherous '70s sleazebag, complete with open polyester shirt. Inside, the NYC band's crackly production and booty-shakin' wah-wahs give it kitsch value, but the girls lack the rhythm and the rhymes for good raps and often drop the groove in funkier, Shaft-type songs. Like dance-floor drugs, In Search of Manny's rush is temporary. C
