The hefty supporting performance of Nicole Kidman in this Australian coming-of-age tale is much less interesting than those of leads Newton and Taylor, who play two outcasts she's black, he's a stutterer at adjoining private schools. They read Camus and Sartre, fall for each other, and have to deal with the rest of the brats as well as neurotic and sadistic teachers. Flirting is sweet, charming and slight. B-
