COOKIN' UP PROFITS ON WALL STREET: A GUIDE TO COMMON-SENSE INVESTING (1993, Central Picture, 800-359-3276, $29.95) The secret to America's financial strength and salvation might well be found among 16 ladies, ages 65 to 90, gathered around a table in a room above a bowling alley in rural Illinois. They are the Beardstown Business and Professional Women's Investment Club, and since 1983 they have seen their portfolio earn big. In this documentary of their success, the women provide detail-rich interviews to inspire others to duplicate their experience. The only flaws: a wordy narration and an overcooked metaphor that compares investing to baking apple pie. Otherwise, this is the most impressive case for participatory capitalism since Adam Smith bought his first piggy bank. A- -Terry Catchpole
