Bill Mallonee has a winning way with rock cliché by way of overwrought Southern poesy, but on Killing Floor his tunes languish amid decorous mandolin, sitar, and organ backing. (I never thought I'd ask for a John Mellencamp treatment, but ''Real Down Town'' begs for it.) Still, shamelessly sweeping hooks save the day. B
