THE AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE SALUTE TO ELIZABETH TAYLOR (ABC, 9-10 p.m.) La Liz is feted for her screen and charity work by Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Dennis Hopper, AIDS researcher Mathilde Krim, and, of course, Michael Jackson, who sits in the audience, surprisingly silent.

7 FRIDAY FAMILY MATTERS (ABC, 8-8:30 p.m.) A prom episode that promises to be a bit less elegant than 90210's: Urkel (Jaleel White) has a hot date, but he doesn't want her to know he's the ultimate high school nerd.

MOVIE: VISIONS OF MURDER (NBC, 9-11 p.m.) What's with these '60s TV sorceresses? First Bewitched's Elizabeth Montgomery played a killer in NBC's Black Widow Murders. Now I Dream of Jeannie's Barbara Eden stars as a psychic shrink who may have offed one of her patients.

GREAT PERFORMANCES: NUREYEV (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.) KARATE MANIA V: THE WORLD KICKBOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS (Showtime, 9:35-11:05 p.m.) Pick your favorite acrobat: PBS honors the recently deceased ballet star Rudolf Nureyev with a clip-filled documentary, while on cable Jean-Yves ''Iceman'' Theriault battles Leo DeSnoo in a championship kickboxing bout.

8 SATURDAY ) ABC WEEKEND SPECIAL: COMMANDER TOAD IN SPACE (ABC, 12:30-1 p.m.) A live-action puppet special based on Jane Yolen's Commander Toad books, featuring the voices of two sci-fi has-beens: Star Wars' Mark Hamill and Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols.

JOE BOB BRIGGS' MOTHER'S DAY EVE TRIPLE FEATURE (The Movie Channel, 9 p.m.-2:30 a.m.) The Texas connoisseur of lurid cin-ema serves up three thrillers only a mother could love: the nasty-nanny smash The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), the Cloris Leachman shoot-'em-up Crazy Mama (1975), and the bloody British gangster flick The Krays (1990). Kathie Lee is not amused.

9 SUNDAY MOVIE: LABOR OF LOVE: THE ARLETTE SCHWEITZER STORY (CBS, 9-11 p.m.) SECOND ANNUAL SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL (NBC, 9-11 p.m.) More salutes to Mom: On CBS, Ann Jillian and Tracey Gold costar in the true story of the first American to give birth to her grandchildren, while SNL cast members gather with their maternal units for their yearly lovefest.
