Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

EW's GRADE
C+

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genres: Action/Adventure, Disaster; With: Joan Fontaine and Walter Pidgeon

With noted hack Irwin Allen (The Swarm) at the helm, this would-be spectacle founders deliciously right from its opening credits, over which Frankie Avalon croons an Airplane! — worthy theme song: ''In a scene/All blue-green/We will find love/At the bottom of the seeeea.'' Things just get soggier from there, as a crusty submarine commander (Pidgeon) attempts to dissipate a burning ring of atmospheric radiation with — of course! — a single well-placed missile. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea's picture and sound are crystalline, which helps make the tacky sets (later reused for the TV show) and clumsily piped-in sound effects seem even more laughably bottom of the barrel. C+
