A modern-day film noir, this taut, emotionally rough, and fiercely intelligent gem proves that the most interesting films being made nowadays find their real homes on video. Dobson plays the lonely, divorced ex-cop-turned-bailbondsman, and Ashton (in a splendid, scarifying performance as a man who has lost his soul) is his wayward partner. Dirty Work, directed by John McPherson, is a dark, uncompromising, and finally shocking meditation on trust and betrayal between friends. Grab it. B+
