If you've been waiting for that anti-gay violence public- service announcement from dancehall star Shabba Ranks, keep waiting. Ranks, who apologized publicly for advocating the crucifixion of gays during a British television show, is quarreling with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) over the content of the upcoming spot. Although the singer approved a script in early May, the watchdog group believes Ranks is reluctant to appear in an ad that features lesbians and gay men. ''It's important that he shows his views on this issue have changed,'' says GLAAD spokesman Donald Suggs. ''Being in the frame with lesbians and gay men would say more than any script ever could.'' Ranks' attorney, Kendall Minter, says the singer ''hasn't dealt with that issue specifically yet, and it would be premature of me to comment on it.'' Meanwhile, Marky Mark, who also came under fire from the group for anti-gay comments, is shooting three PSAs coordinated by GLAAD and the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence. Ideas for the proposed spots include scenes of gay and lesbian couples juxtaposed with text of homophobic words. Mark would also deliver an under-wraps closer that will play off his modeling fame. The ads should debut by Gay Pride Day, June 27.
