Timing may not be everything, but in video, it's close. After only one week in stores, Trespass, directed by Walter Hill (48 HRS.) and featuring rap megastars Ice Cube and Ice-T, bursts onto the top 10 rentals chart. Although the film-about a pair of white fortune hunters who run afoul of black gang members-initially looked to become a crossover hit along the lines of New Jack City, it fizzled at the box office, earning just over $12 million. But its video success shouldn't be too surprising: Hollywood insiders agree that releasing the violent urban thriller smack in the middle of the Christmas season may have doomed its theatrical run.
