It had bad buzz and negative reviews-many of them arriving late due to Paramount's desperate-seeming decision to screen it for the media only at the eleventh hour. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller Sliver did more than a sliver of business its first weekend. If nothing else, the film's $12 million take proves that Sharon Stone can open a movie as well as any male star can. Still, will the grosses hold? Sliver received an ominous C- from audiences polled by CinemaScore, indicating that the film's popularity may be skin-deep. Ditto for Hot Shots! Part Deux, whose opening-weekend take of $10.3 million was slightly below that of the first Hot Shots! (major sequels usually open bigger than the original). Deux won't qualify as Hot unless it has another boffo weekend. Weekend Gross Weeks in Gross* TOP Ten to Date Release
