Remember when Robert Redford's skin didn't resemble your old wallet? In The Hot Rock, as the attitudinous mastermind of a New York City jewel heist, he's an early-'70s fashion statement: raggedy jeans, bushy sideburns, bed-head hair. The movie's location photography looks equally fresh in its original wide-screen format; director Peter Yates (''Bullit'') wisely cuts to some picturesque vista whenever the repartee among fellow thieves George Segal, Ron Leibman, Paul Sand, and Zero Mostel gets overly cute.
