A ROYAL NAME PAIN

The latest bizarre announcement from Prince -that he will henceforth be known not as Prince but as -has raised even more amusing questions than the story line for Graffiti Bridge. For instance, how do you pronounce it? And has he filed the necessary papers to change his name to a symbol? Prince representatives say they aren't aware that he has submitted such papers (his attorney was out of the country), but they seem untroubled. ''When you look back, there have been a number of things he's done in his career that people have not understood,'' says a Prince spokeswoman, who adds that she does not yet have a correct pronunciation. MTV has been using a metallic clank as its pronunciation. What about record stores? ''We'll still be filing it under P,'' says a spokesman for Tower Records. ''Whatever his decision, we still have to think sensibly.''
