Mingus' music, as straightforwardly captured in this 1964 concert, remains as fresh and challenging as almost anything in jazz today. This is the only known footage of composer-bassist Mingus with innovative sax man Eric Dolphy (savor ''So Long, Eric'') -- who, two months later, would be dead of a heart attack at 36.
