Steve Martin is amusing but oddly distant as a glitzy tent-show preacher selling bogus salvation, and dour Debra Winger is miscast as his high-tech gal Friday. More to the point, the script is a mess: Aiming for comic spirituality, it comes down this side of paradise via underwritten characters and sloppy plotting. You have to admire a movie that drags the old Crippled Kid Brother routine out of mothballs. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be renting ''Elmer Gantry'' instead.
