Details Writer: Trey Ellis; Genre: Fiction

HOME REPAIRS Trey Ellis (Simon & Schuster, $21) For Austin McMillan-the preppie young black man whose horny journal entries comprise Trey Ellis' second novel, Home Repairs-sex looms larger than God, with the same power to strike fear and to redeem. Alternately pedestrian and hilarious, McMillan's record of sexual experiences smoothly captures the plethora of neuroses unique to the perpetually hard up. His refusal to learn from the mistakes noted in his own scribblings proves bothersome on occasion, but then again, as Ellis quaintly writes, ''Everyone knows that a heart and a d -- - can't read.''
