BLUE PLANET (1990)

BLUE PLANET (1990, Lumivision, $39.95) Shown on vast IMAX screens at museums across the country, this 42-minute documentary about the earth's imperiled atmosphere is an ooh-aah rush. But the shot-from-space vistas don't inspire the same awe on the home screen-even in the high-resolution laserdisc format- where the sense of a three-dimensional window on the globe gets lost. No matter how small your television set, though, the film builds a scary case, detailing how easily pollution could put human beings out of the picture. And if you get tired of the stentorian warnings, switch from the disc's analog tracks to the digital ones, which include only music and sound effects. B+ -Steve Daly
