THE BACHELOR (1993)

In this slow, deliberate adaptation of an Arthur Schnitzler novel, a subdued Carradine is surprisingly effective as a turn-of-the-century German doctor who is alienated from his own feelings and shies away from the world. His inability to put himself at risk emotionally results in both disappointment and tragedy. Richardson (The Crying Game, Damage) provides another tour de force in a dual role as both his deeply unhappy sister and a silly hausfrau. Although the film is finely tuned, it lacks the grand passion necessary to make it as intensely moving as it aspires to be.
