POETIC JUSTICE (R) In his follow-up to Boyz N the Hood, director John Singleton splatters his ambition all over the screen, yet he barely demonstrates the discipline to shape a scene. This mishmash of a movie centers on a South Central L.A. hairdresser, the proud but serene Justice (Janet Jackson), who expresses her loneliness by writing mournful poems. But wait- Poetic Justice is also a raucous, chaotic road comedy. Though Singleton remains triumphantly vague about what he wants to say, he insists on saying it with an air of suffocating self-importance. Jackson isn't an inept actress, but there are no more edges to her personality than there are to her plastic Kewpie-doll visage. C- ( 180, July 23) -OG
