THE GEORGE McKENNA STORY Denzel Washington, Lynn Whitfield (1986, Prism, unrated, $79.95) Washington plays an idealistic principal who brings order to the chaos of a South Central L.A. high school. Based on a true story, this drama avoids most of the usual teacher-in-the-ghetto cliches. But because it was made for network TV, it must necessarily pull too many of its punches, so the message gets muted. B- -MS
